Robert Aickman (1914–1981) was an English writer and conservationist. He called his supernatural fiction “strange stories,” often building unease through suggestion and atmosphere. His books include Cold Hand in Mine, Sub Rosa and The Late Breakfasters. He also co-founded the Inland Waterways Association, which worked to preserve and restore Britain’s canal system.
