The Trail to Innsmouth: Tales from the Arkham Chronicle

Some roads should not be followed to their end.

In late 1919, five wartime companions, bound by service and loss, leave Arkham on an expedition along the old trail to Innsmouth, carrying the last personal effects of their dead friend, Jacob Waite, back toward his family on the coast.

Their route leads beyond the Old Oak Crossroads and into the remote wooded country west of town, where ravines cut through the land, tributary streams run toward the Manuxet, and old paths vanish where maps can no longer be trusted. The man hired to lead them knows the ground too well: the abandoned crossings, the hidden grotto, the ritual clearings, and the stories behind the white-gold markers hung among the red oaks and hemlocks.

At first, the journey brings only difficult ground, cold rain, and fog thick enough to make every distance uncertain. But the deeper they descend, the more the ravine begins to close around them. They find carvings cut into stone, abandoned fire pits along the ravine, and offering sites where no one should have lingered. Crab shells, lobster carapaces, and beach sand lie far from the shore. The markers multiply. And something from the sea has found its way inland.

What began as a duty to the dead becomes a passage through territory already claimed. One by one, the travelers learn what the trail to Innsmouth has always been: a summons.

And something has been waiting where the markers end.

The Trail to Innsmouth is a standalone Lovecraftian horror novel set before The Shadow Over Innsmouth , expanding the mythos inland through fogbound ravines, ritual markers, and the black waters around Devil Reef.

Blending post-war historical horror with cosmic dread, folk ritual, and slow-burn survival terror, The Trail to Innsmouth follows the approach to one of weird fiction’s most infamous towns. Rather than beginning in Innsmouth’s streets, the novel traces the roads, ravines, marshes, and thresholds by which travelers may fall under its influence long before they ever reach the coast.

Perfect for fans of H. P. Lovecraft, The Shadow Over Innsmouth , The Willows , The Fisherman , The Ritual , Annihilation , The Terror , and atmospheric cosmic horror rooted in landscape, folklore, implication, and dread.
